There are 2 ways I could review this movie. I could review it from the angle of the ‘purist’ who has to have the movie stay pure or as close to pure to comic canon as possible.  In which case the movie would receive failing grades all around based on the fact that the Mandarin character was never fully realized. Once you see that he is being used to dupe the world into thinking that he is the mastermind of his bin Ladin like attacks you the audience member will feel like you were duped too as we were “promised” a worthy villain unlike any we have ever seen. One who would brutalize Tony Stark more than he was since the first movie. Also the ‘purists’ should be furious about the Extremis project and how it was changed for the movie in which it was never really mentioned at how fast Tony could process information but they retained…you know what screw it, purists would hate this movie.

The movie I saw was good for a Hollywood first out of the gate blockbuster movie. I liked the idea that Tony’s biggest issue this movie is getting over the PTSD that he is suffering after his battle in The Avengers and his near death experience. he is trying to get his life together when the Mandarin decides to go bin Ladin on the world. The idea of course it’s because Aldrich Killian was butt-hurt because he got turned down by Stark years ago which caused Killian to create AIM (purists should be spitting bullets as most know that AIM was created during WWII and an offshoot of HYDRA, but we are splitting hairs here right purists?) which became the modern day analog to al-Qaeda. Once Tony learns that Happy is personally injured by Mandarin he goes on the offensive.

The movie itself was a lot better paced than the second one without leaving a lot of us hanging but one of the biggest plot holes to me was if the mandarin was such a credible threat, why wasn’t SHIELD a bigger presence in this movie? Mandarin’s forces pretty much destroys Tony’s home and committed tons of terrorist acts and yo mean to tell me that SHIELD can stop space aliens but couldn’t stop Mandarin? Well, that may be the ‘purist’ in me but it was a plot hole that was kinda missed but on the other hand with the story the movie was trying to convey I look at it as, if you ever want to see what a person does when they stand up, knock them down first and take all of their toys from them and walk away from them as they are crying. Be the bully and that is what we got here. Plot holes aside, the story itself was watching Tony have everything taken from him but of course, like Batman, Tony has his Deus Machina around when he needs it and when it all goes down, you get a scene near that end that is somehow more satisfying than the last movie.

I am still however mixed on how the Mandarin was treated this movie. The idea that he is just a shadowy figure and a puppet that Killian pulled the strings on was a good twist that I think no one saw coming and even when Kingsley was explaining how he was just a two bit actor playing a face, I was still half expecting it to be a ruse and he would drop the hammer on Tony, but when the moment passed I was still pretty surprised that this was the move Marvel allowed to be made considering that in the comics the Mandarin makes for a great and ruthless rival of Stark (and even Victor von Doom) especially with his 10 rings and martial arts prowess.

Also your miles may vary on how Tony gets back into the fight because of an eight year old boy. Some of the scenes between RDJ and Ty Simpkins were good but there were some that could be borderline inappropriate and creepy which brings me to…DON CHEADLE. More than enough undue hype was brought along the fact that the Iron Patriot (purists are you mad that no nod was given to Norman Osborne for creating the armor? Well hey go make Sony pictures sell back the rights of Spider-man to Marvel Studios so we can get a proper Iron Patriot reboot movie!! HAHHAHAA) would be a chief armor in the movie and while we had a few more scenes with Cheadle donning the armor but One would have hoped that in the last fight scene we could have seen more action with Iron Patriot against the AIM enhanced soldiers. It’s pretty much Iron Patriot saves the president, drops him off and you don’t see him again and it was wasted. Granted that the last fight scene was better than part II even with showcasing the many armors but still wasted when it comes to Iron Patriot. By the way, did I forget Guy Pierce? He was ok but Sam Rockwell was better in Iron Man II.

All in all, when it’s said and done, you almost get the feel that this was done almost along the same lines of Batman: DKR but just not so heavy in tone. Iron Man 3 came along did what it needed to do and closed out the chapter, not with a huge bang but with an ok boom and actually more of a boom signalling ”our summer movie is first out the gates, we made our money, what about the rest of you?’ And now, we shall see what Man of Steel can do and if it will get DC Comics movies on track

Iron Man 3 just barely gets a 3 out of 5 stars

Not the home run we were looking for but it’s a hit to get the crowd talking.

INGREDIENTS

• 3-4 ice cubes
• 1 1/2 oz vodka (45 ml)
• 2/3 oz dry white vermouth (20 ml)
• 1 lemon peel

INSTRUCTION
Pour the vodka and vermouth over ice. Stir with ice and strain into a martini/cocktail glass. Squeeze some oil from a lemon peel, then put the peel in the glass.

Interspersed with candid interviews with random Hollywood types, fashion and style professions, and everyday men and women, the core of Mansome revolves around the stories of three men and their divergent view points and rationales for their own choices in grooming and appearance. The first of the three stories is that of Beard and Mustache Champion Jack Passion. Jack’s passion for beards is in many ways his outward declaration to the world that this is what a man should look like. With a beard that is easily three feet long and similar to those of ZZ Top (who appear in the film), Passion’s story takes us from no name bars where regional beard and mustache competitions are held, to the German Beard and Mustache championships as part of the American competitive team. Jack ultimately became the first American to win the German championship and through his journey we saw the continued prominence of the beard and mustache as a sign of manliness.

Former WWE and TNA wrestler Shawn Daivari was the focus of the middle story. Daivari’s tale sought to highlight many men’s “battle” with full body hair and the perceptions thereof. As an avid watcher of wrestling for most of my life, I never realized that wrestlers were “hairless”. Daivari’s constant grooming regiment to completely remove the hair from his back, arms, and chest (along with the candid interviews that also were featured) in many ways illuminated the least desirable perception of male body hair, and its constant reinforcement through sports and other popular media. The examination of this Adonis Complex (as it is referenced in the film) would make an interesting film unto itself. It is disappointing that Mansome didn’t delve further into the issue and is societal ramifications on male body image and self-esteem.

The third story features self-labeled metrosexual and fashion buyer Ricky Manchandra as he constantly seeks to find ways to make himself looks better. While not taking it the extreme as with other depictions of body dysmorphic disorder, Ricky is shown to be someone who is very obsessed with the way he looks. In a constant struggle to shed who he was as a teen, Ricky is shown finding flaws with his appearance at every glance in the mirror. His resulting perception precipitates many actions including the use of concealer and visiting a dermatologist to destroy capillaries in on his nose. While not extreme, Manchandra’s constant of finding fault in his appearance could lead to more drastic and invasive actions down the line.

The word of mansome describes a man who is both manly and handsome, the movie of the same name is entertaining yet merely scratches the surface of the real issues that men and boys are dealing with every day. While not meant to be a deep investigation, Mansome can serve as an adequate starting point for serious discussion. The varying perception and images of manhood and manliness that are pumped out by the media and society as a whole and the effects that they have are often ignored and dismissed by that very society. Hopefully movies like Mansome will just be the beginning of an ongoing dialogue about how we view ourselves as men and how we learn to be comfortable and confident in our own skin.

The fans are the ones who can make or break a convention, and with Awesome con the fans undeniably made the convention as they showed up in droves dressed as their favorite characters from comics, television, and the silver screen. There were Daleks, Spidermen, Supermen, & Batmen of all ages, shapes, sizes, backgrounds, and gender. Fans dressed as Ghostbusters regaled in joy as Ernie Hudson donned is Winston Zeddmore uniform from the Ghostbusters films, while cosplayers dressed as various Lanterns and Static waited in line to meet Phil Lamar. While it was hard to pick our favorites, here are some of the great cosplayers from Awesome con.

Ingredients

• 5 Oz Brut champagne (150 ml)
• 2 Oz gold rum (60 ml)
• 1 tsp honey
• 0.5 Oz lime juice
• Ice

Preparation

In a shaker, mix the lime juice, honey, and rum with the ice. Pour into a glass without straining and then add the champagne.

We are halfway through April and already there is anticipation and excitement for this year's summer crop of movies and if you are really excited, then you know by August your wallet will be crying for mercy as you spend nearly 50 dollars or more (movies dates ain't cheap or haven't you heard!!!) for many of this summer's offerings.  be honest, you can't (and probably shouldn't) see everything.

What makes a smartwatch so smart you might ask? The brains of the smartwatch comes from a wireless connection (usually Bluetooth) to your smart phone. Using this connection most of these devices are able to control functions on your phone such as playing music, checking email, getting weather and text alerts in addition to telling the time. As stated before, the smartwatch isn’t a new concept but the lower entry price, the proliferation of smartphones, and the new-found stylishness of many of the newer smartwatches on the market have made them very visible and desirable to the average consumer.

The Pebble watch became an internet darling with its clear and crisp e-ink screen and the corresponding smartphone apps which allow owners to customize the watch to their own sensibilities and style. The style of the Pebble is a simple one that features watches and bands of various colors. Its appearance while sleek is very casual in nature. While it works well with your everyday attire, it probably won’t be your first choice to compliment your tuxedo at that random black tie event. With its ability to be customized and its deep integration with the dominant smartphone platforms, the Pebble is certainly at the head of the pack when it comes to the current iteration of the smartwatch.

Then Touch Time by Phosphor bills itself as a smarter watch and not a smartwatch. The offering by Phosphor does not offer the interconnectivity that the Pebble does, but it offers a very crisp e-ink display that is similar to Pebble. The watch does offer a host of applications built into the device that seek to offer users a more robust or “smarter” experience when wearing a timepiece. Unlike the Pebble, Touch Time offers metal bands in addition to the standard silicon ones. In our opinion, this makes the Phosphor a more versatile timepiece.

A third smartwatch that is on the market is the Metawatch. Metawatch offered its smartwatch in two flavors; the Strata and the Frame. The Strata’s design is more akin to a sportswatch. Its face is a bit more protruding than its more expensive sibling the Frame. Both the Strata and the Frame offer the same tethered connectivity for iOS and android devices(read this great review of the Strata @scrumptyous1 by here). For a more professional everyday watch, the Frame is the one that fits the bill.

The Pebble, Touch Smart, and the Metawatch are not the only smartwatches in town. There are credible and stylish devices from Sony, i’m Watch, Cookoo, and many others on the market. Most of the current offerings range in price from $150 to $300 (some are a little lower) for most base model smart watches. This firmly putting them in the realm for most anyone who is willing to venture out on a limb to replace their traditional timepiece. With their connectivity and integration with all other tech aspects of our lives, only time will tell if smartwatches eventually become the focal point of the public’s timekeeping needs or if they will only remain the jewel of a fringe portion of the tech obsessed.
